Australian boxing legend Johnny Famechon was one of the greatest boxers Australia’s ever seen. The Fight Night Series is proud to make available what were arguably his three most important fights in his thrilling career.

Famechon Vs. Jose Legra
The fight was set for the Albert Hall, London on January 21 1969 and Legra was a 5-1 favourite. The Cuban was 26 and had won 54 fights straight, going back to 1965. But for round after round against him, Famechon played hit-and-run, darting out the jab and retreating behind a punch-proof defense as Legra slowed down with frustration. It was not always pretty to watch but while Legra hit air, Famechon piled on the points. A desperate Legra chased Famechon in the 15th round almost heading him through the ropes. But he could not break the youngster’s defense and at the final bell Famechon confidently walked to the referee who raised his hand in victory. Johnny Famechon has won the WBC world title.

Famechon Vs Harada (Syd & Tokyo)
After winning the WBC featherweight title against Jose Legra, made his first defence of the title against Japan’s Fighting Harada at Sydney Stadium on July 28, 1969. The referee and sole judge for the fight, overawed by the occasion, had made a mistake with his scoring and after Famechon had hit the canvas three times, declared the bout a draw. As Harada’s handlers protested and the crowd booed, the referee’s scoring was checked and it was discovered that he had, indeed, made a serious error. But not the type that most in the crowd imagined. He had Famechon actually winning by a point. Both fighters believed they had won the match, and a re-match was certain. It was set for January 6, 1970 at the Municipal Gymnasium, Tokyo. The popular Harada was understandably the favourite, out not only to add the featherweight title to his previous honours at fly and bantamweight, but to avenge the shame of his defeat in the Martial Arts Hall two years earlier against another Australian legend, Lionel Rose. What followed was one of the greatest boxing matches in Australia’s boxing history.
