Monica Vitti plays an engineer's wife adrift in the stark industrial landscape of Northern Italy - she has a nervous breakdown, attempts suicide and starts a tentative affair. In this key work - and his first film in colour - Antonioni deploys colour to extraordinary emotional effect, suggesting the interior landscape of his main character by the non-realist colouring of the landscape around her. In his carefully framed compositions objects resemble elements in an abstract painting while Vitti crumples fetchingly against decaying walls as jets roar overhead.
