Toshiro Mifune stars as a wealthy industrialist and corporate Machiavelli who becomes the target of extortion. When his chauffeur’s son is kidnapped in his own son's place, he must pay the huge ransom and loose his empire, or else take responsibility for the boy's life. Tightly directed and filled with his 1960's police action, Kurosawa's superb film noir takes us deep into the insufferable head and seedy, heroin-addicted underworld of postwar Tokyo.
