When you follow your dream, there's no telling what you'll become.
In her new comedy, Connie and Carla, Nia Vardalos, the writer and star of My Big Fat Greek Wedding, mixes in a dash of two classic film comedies – Some Like it Hot and Victor/Victoria.
Connie (Vardalos) and Carla (Toni Collette) are two struggling, working class dinner theatre performers whose lives are turned topsy-turvy when they accidentally witness a mafia hit. Fearing for their lives, they go on the run and head to Los Angeles where they go undercover as drag queens. To pluralise a line from Victor/Victoria it’s all about “girls pretending to be men pretending to be girls”.
Behind their big wigs, Connie and Carla become a big hit, but the longer the charade goes on, the more difficult things become, especially when Connie falls for Jeff (David Duchovny) – a guy who is looking for his drag-queen brother and who, naturally, assumes Connie is a guy, too.
It’s a tangled web of taffeta and tinsel and as the mafia mobsters close in things get even stickier.
