Northern Exposure was another quirky and offbeat series from the guys who gave us St. Elsewhere, Joshua Brand &John Falsey. The series is part comedy and part drama; because of this the show is hard to classify. After Northern Exposure won an Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series, Joshua Brand let the "cat out of the bag" that the show is supposed to be a comedy. He might have done this so that next year, it would not be able to compete against another one of their dramas I'll Fly Away, which was airing at that time. At the 44th Emmy Awards, the series had 14 nominations (4 for acting, 3 for writing, 1 for direction and several technical), the most for any series at the time. The show won 6 awards, tying with The Simpsons that year for the most. See the 3rd season for details on the nominations and winners. Their other show, I'll Fly Away swept the 1st Annual American Television Awards the following year, shutting Northern Exposure out and at the 45th Emmy awards the show had sixteen nominations and was shut-out.
