Australia's classic endurance race, the Bathurst 1000, has entertained millions of people over its 30 years - probably none more colourful than the 1967-1974 era. It was during this period that youngsters of the calibre of Colin Bond, Allan Moffat, Peter Brock and John Goss emerged to carve a niche for themselves in local motor sporting history.
In 1967 the 'old fox' Harry Firth, and a fresh faced Fred Gibson shared a Ford Falcon GT to take out the enduro. It was Firth's fourth visit to victory lane at Mount panorama, and teh struggle in this era between Ford and Holden was to become a focal point of the race for years to come.
The old guard were to make way for a bespectacled Canadian in 1970 and 1971, Allan Moffat making his mark in Australian motor sport with solo feats in the GTHO Falcons and posting back to back wins.
In 1972 a young Peter Brock took Holden to victory in the Torana XU-1. Little did enthusiasts of the time realise that this was the start of Brock earning his legendary title 'King Of The Mountain' over the years to come. The following year the race was officially lengthened to 1000km.
1967-1970 in Black and White. 1971-1974 in Colour.
This fantastic era of the Bathurst 1000 will absolutely delight any motor sport enthusiast.
