Description
Changing Lanes:
Affluent Wall Street lawyer Gavin Banek (Ben Affleck) and recovering alcoholic Doyle Gipson (Samuel L. Jackson) are both on their way to vital court hearings when they get involved in a fender bender accident with each other on New York's FDR Drive. In a rush, Banek leaves the scene without doing things by the book, but he leaves behind an important document. Stranded, Gipson is late for a custody hearing, and so begins a cruel game of one-upmanship between the men. Changing Lanes is an engrossing, intelligently scripted urban drama.
Coach Carter:
Coach Carter is based on true events and while it contains the familiar theme of an underdog team’s soaring to excellence it is also about a man who tries to push that team to far greater things. As is mentioned during the movie, Carter wants to put the word, “student” back into the term, “student athlete”. To this end, on his first day with the team, he makes it clear who’s in charge by laying down some ground rules; he insists that all of the members sign a contract in which they must agree to maintain a 2.3 grade average, attend all their classes, sit in the front row and wear a tie on game days. Carter wants his athletes’ lives not to be ruled by the game alone in the hope that they can escape the unpromising future that inevitably awaits most of them.
Shaft:
Cool and deadly NYPD detective John Shaft arrests Walter Wade, Jr. in a racially-motivated slaying. The eye witness disappears, Wade jumps bail for Switzerland, and Shaft is livid. Two years later, Wade returns to face trial, confident his father's money and influence (and racial politics) guarantee an innocent verdict. Shaft looks hard for the witness, so Wade wants someone to kill her. He turns to a ghetto drug king, Peoples Hernandez, who's willing to kill for money, use Wade as a route to rich drug customers, and shaft Shaft. Can Shaft find the witness, convince her to testify, and shepherd her through the hail of bullets that Peoples is sure to let fly?
