Get Lucky is a beautiful, contemplative album from the legendary singer and guitarist from Dire Straits. Knopfler has always been an exquisite musical artisan, but aside from his work with Dire Straits, he's never achieved popular fame. Get Lucky is a foray into radio-playable music. His style still mines from Celtic, folk guitar, blues and Americana, but the difference lies in the depth and heart in the lyrics. In the liner notes, Knopfler writes about the inspiration behind many of his songs: he recalls his wild youth in "The Car was the One," and "Monteleone" speaks to the craftsman Joe Monteleone who crafted his guitar.

Stand-out tracks include "Border Reiver," a piece of Celtic Americana with a flute collaboration that makes you melt, and the title track "Get Lucky" which sings to the working-class yearning for a bit of luck. For these hard economic times, "Get Lucky" is like food for the soul, without getting too sentimental. "Hard Shoulder," a song about a strong man's loss, borrows from Mo-town ballads. Ever the virtuoso, Knopfler's croon here echoes the greats like Burt Bacharach, and of course his guitar chops are superb.

Music buffs have always known of Knopfler's genius. It doesn't falter in his new album. However, the first time I heard "Border Reiver" on the radio I was ecstatic. With "Get Lucky," Knopfler has finally tapped the ears of the general public to his solo work.
