It is Christmas 1183 and the aging and scheming King Henry II (Peter O'Toole) organises a reunion in order to name his successor. His scheming but imprisoned wife, Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine (Katharine Hepburn); his mistress Princess Alais (whom he wants to marry), his three sons, Richard (Anthony Hopkins), Geoffrey, and John; and the young but crafty King Philip of France (Timothy Dalton) who is also Alais' brother, are all summoned for the reunion. Each guest is aware that the fate of Henry's empire is at stake, and everybody engages in their own brand of deception and treachery to stake their claim. The Lion In Winter won Catherine Hepburn her 11th Oscar nomination and third win for Best Actress, while the film also went on to win two additional Oscars, two Golden Globes and two BAFTAs.
