John Safran – The Lost Pilot

The much-awaited release of the 1998 ABC pilot ‘John Safran, Media Tycoon’ is here. It's the banned show with the infamous Ray Martin confrontation. This is one of John Safran’s first and most controversial incursions into the world of television tomfoolery. Already boasting his trademark neurotic-sarcastic persona, a youthful Safran screeches: ‘how does someone like you break into the media and become a tycoon? It’s actually a piece of cake.’ What follows is a hilarious series of irony-laden lessons including ‘how to be a television journalist’ (it involves slacking off), ‘how to get onto Sale of the Century’ (it involves cheating) and ‘how to get a clip on Rage’ (it involves letting a 5-year-old, high on red cordial loose with a camera). Safran runs around spying on people, sabotaging cinema screenings, and lighting himself on fire, all the while trying to hysterically impart his hilariously warped views onto the world.
