Description
Before winning three BAFT As best actress and earning a lifetime achievement award from the British Comedy Awards, Dame Thora Hird charmed audiences in this delightful series. She plays Emily Ridley - a gung-ho, old-school Salvation Army captain whom her superiors would like to put out to pasture. Instead, she and her niece (Patsy Rowlands) take assignments in Yorkshire, where they try to bring hilariously eccentric smalltown sinners to salvation. Irreverent but never irreligious, the comedy takes gentle jabs at hypocrisy of all kinds, and DameThora invests Emily with respect while still wringing out laughs.
