Description
Told in flashback as Michelangelo Caravaggio (1571-1610) lies dying in poverty, the film brilliantly recreates the look and colour of the artist’s original paintings while exploring the homoerotic subtext of his work – and speculating on a vicious love triangle involving the artist, a model (Sean Bean) and his wife (Tilda Swinton).
Arguably the most accessible of Jarman’s films, it remains a testament to his distinctive visual style.
