Description
The Big Clock’s title makes clear that this gripping noir thriller is above all defined by its sense of urgently diminishing time. Australian-born director John Farrow combines frenetic pacing with an escalating atmosphere of tension and suspense. Adapted by Jonathan Latimer from Kenneth Fearing’s novel (also the basis for the successful 1987 remake No Way Out), The Big Clock explores the classic noir themes of sex, violence, corruption and moral ambiguity.
Magazine magnate and tyrannical boss Earl Janoth (Charles Laughton) orders his dedicated editor George Stroud (Ray Milland) to take on a special assignment. Little does Stroud know that this job will involve Janoth’s mistress Pauline York (Rita Johnson), murder most foul, and a series of events that eventually threaten the editor’s own personal safety. Dominated by Milland and Laughton’s wonderful central performances, The Big Clock also features Maureen O’Sullivan (Farrow’s wife), Elsa Lanchester (the Bride of Frankenstein) and professional Hollywood villain George Macready.
Stylishly designed and photographed, with inventive use of New York locations and a distinctive Victor Young score, The Big Clock is regularly nominated as a classic of the genre.
