Description

Master French auteur Robert Bresson created his landmark statement of cinematic art with this affecting story of a saint-like donkey ruthlessly victimised by human greed and folly. Reared in the idyllic French countryside by doting young children, the donkey Balthazar is soon put into bondage before spurning his master and finding his way to the loving Marie, a poor, beautiful girl whose parallel destiny sees her abused by the village rogues, drunks and delinquents.

Godard famously claimed that Au Hasard Balthazar is “the world in an hour and a half”, and Bresson, who brilliantly employs non-professional actors, affecting imagery and a sublime soundtrack, creates a beautiful and moving allegory of sacrifice, suffering and redemption.
